GPEC PCM Unlock Guide: GPEC2, GPEC2A, GPEC3, GPEC4, GPEC4LM & GPEC5
If your tuning software throws a security or write error on a 2013 or newer Dodge, Jeep, RAM, Chrysler, Fiat or Alfa Romeo, the cause is almost always the Continental GPEC engine controller. This is the complete reference: what each GPEC generation is, how to identify the one in your vehicle, whether it can be unlocked, and what the unlock actually costs and takes. N2 Speed performs GPEC bench unlocks in Pompano Beach, FL with a typical 1–2 business day turnaround.
What is a GPEC PCM?
GPEC stands for Global Powertrain Engine Controller — the Continental-built PCM/ECM family used across FCA and Stellantis vehicles. Beginning around the 2013–2015 model years, these controllers shipped with RSA encryption that blocks calibration writes through the OBD-II port. A GPEC unlock is a bench-level procedure that removes that write restriction so HP Tuners or DiabloSport can read and flash a custom calibration. It does not add power by itself — it is the gate you must pass before any custom tuning is possible.
GPEC generations at a glance
| Controller | Processor / size | Typical years & vehicles | Unlock status |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPEC1 | Early Continental | ~2011–2013 Pentastar and HEMI applications | Generally OBD-tunable, no unlock required |
| GPEC2 | MPC5566, 3 MB | 2013–2018 Charger, Challenger, 300, Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500 — 3.6L, 5.7L | Bench unlock available |
| GPEC2A | MPC5674F, 4 MB | 2015–2023 Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Cherokee / SRT / Trackhawk, RAM 1500 — 5.7L HEMI, 6.4L 392, 6.2L Hellcat | Bench unlock available — the most common unlock we perform |
| GPEC3 | MPC5674F, 4 MB | Later Stellantis petrol applications | Bench unlock available |
| GPEC4 / GPEC4LM | MPC5674F | 2016+ Compass, Renegade, Hornet, Tonale, 500X, Grand Cherokee 3.6L | Bench unlock available; some applications now OBD |
| GPEC5 | MPC5777 | 2018+ Wrangler JL 3.6L, 2021+ Gladiator JT 3.6L, 2021+ RAM 1500 TRX 6.2L, 2023+ RAM 1500 5.7L eTorque, Promaster 3.6L, 3.0L Hurricane platforms | Limited — newest generation, application-specific. Contact us to confirm your VIN before ordering. |
How to identify which GPEC you have
- Start with year, engine and platform. A 2015–2023 5.7L or 6.4L Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Cherokee or RAM 1500 is almost always GPEC2A. A 2013–2015 car with the same engines is usually GPEC2.
- Check the file size on a read. GPEC2 reads at roughly 3 MB (MPC5566). GPEC2A and GPEC3 read at roughly 4 MB (MPC5674F). That is the fastest way to tell 2 from 2A.
- Read the label on the PCM. The Continental part number and hardware revision are printed on the module case, next to the Mopar part number.
- Jeep Wrangler JL, Gladiator JT, RAM TRX and 5.7 eTorque are the tell-tale GPEC5 platforms. If your tool reports "unsupported ECU" on one of these, that is why.
- Still unsure? Send us your year, model, engine and VIN and we will identify the controller for you before you buy anything.
Do I need an unlock, or just a security gateway bypass?
These are two different problems and people mix them up constantly.
- PCM lock (encryption) — lives inside the controller. Requires a bench unlock with the module removed. This is what a GPEC unlock service solves.
- Security Gateway Module (SGW) — added by FCA on 2018+ vehicles, sits on the CAN bus in the car. It blocks write commands over OBD even after the PCM is unlocked. It is solved with an SGW bypass cable, not a bench service.
On a 2018 or newer vehicle you typically need both: the PCM unlocked, and an SGW bypass cable to flash it in the car.
What a GPEC bench unlock includes at N2 Speed
- Full backup read of flash and EEPROM before any work is performed
- Update to the latest factory OS / calibration where applicable
- Professional bench unlock configured for your chosen platform — HP Tuners or DiabloSport
- Verification read after unlock, so the module leaves confirmed working
- Optional VIN programming, SKIM / security reset, MDS delete and speed limiter removal
- Return shipping with tracking, typically 1–2 business days after receipt
The mail-in process
- Pick your tuning platform first — HP Tuners or DiabloSport. The unlock is configured for one of them.
- Order the matching service and select your platform at checkout.
- Remove and ship the module only — not the vehicle — to N2 Speed, 1461 SW 30th Ave, Bay 16, Pompano Beach, FL 33069. Include your order number.
- We unlock and verify it, typically within 1–2 business days of arrival.
- It ships back with tracking. Reinstall, connect your device, and flash.
- Optional: add a custom remote tune for your exact mod list, handled entirely over email with datalogs.
GPEC unlock FAQ
Can a GPEC2A be unlocked over OBD? No. The initial unlock is a boot-mode operation that requires the module on a bench. Once unlocked, subsequent calibration writes can be done over OBD in the vehicle.
Can GPEC5 be unlocked? GPEC5 is the newest MPC5777-based controller and support is application-specific rather than universal. Some Jeep and RAM applications are now serviceable; others are not yet. Send us your VIN and we will confirm before you order or ship anything.
Will unlocking damage or brick my PCM? Performed correctly on a bench with a full prior backup, no. We back up flash and EEPROM before touching the module and verify it after.
Does the unlock void anything at the dealer? The unlock itself does not change how factory tools service the module — the dealer can still read and program it normally. Modified calibrations are a separate matter and can affect powertrain warranty coverage.
Do I have to send the whole car? No. Only the PCM or TCM. That is the entire advantage of a mail-in bench service — you can be anywhere in the country.
How much does a GPEC unlock cost and how long does it take? Pricing depends on the controller and whether you need extras like VIN programming or a SKIM reset. Turnaround is typically 1–2 business days from the day your module arrives. See the service listings below for current pricing.
What about the TCM? Transmission controllers are a separate service. We flash NAG1, ZF 8HP70/75/90 and 10-speed TCMs for shift strategy, torque management and line pressure.
