HP Tuners vs DiabloSport for 2015+ HEMI: Which Should You Buy?
If you own a 2015 or newer Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500, or Chrysler 300, there are two mainstream ways to run a custom tune: HP Tuners (MPVI2/MPVI3 interface with VCM Suite) or DiabloSport (inTune i3, Trinity 2, PredatorX). Both work. They are built for different owners. Here is the honest comparison from a shop that unlocks and tunes these platforms every day.
The one thing that applies to both
Every 2015+ Dodge, Jeep, RAM and Chrysler PCM (GPEC2 / GPEC2A and later) ships with factory security encryption. No tuning device can write to it until the PCM is unlocked. That is a bench-level service: you ship us the module, we update it to the latest factory OS, unlock it for your chosen platform, and ship it back. Pick your platform before you order the unlock, because the unlock is configured for HP Tuners or for DiabloSport.
Quick comparison
| HP Tuners | DiabloSport | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Modified builds, forced induction, cam/heads, data-driven tuning | Bolt-on cars, first-time tuners, plug-and-play |
| Calibration depth | Very deep — full tables, transmission, torque management | Moderate — canned + custom tune loading |
| Data logging | Excellent, channel-configurable, the industry standard for revisions | Basic logging |
| Learning curve | Steeper | Gentle, handheld interface |
| Cost model | Interface + credits per VIN | Device price includes vehicle licensing |
| Multiple vehicles | Yes, buy credits per additional VIN | Typically one vehicle at a time |
Choose HP Tuners if…
- You are supercharged, turbocharged, or running a cam and heads package.
- You want proper datalogs so your tuner can make precise revisions instead of guessing.
- You plan to keep modifying the car and want the calibration to keep up.
- You want transmission and torque-management control alongside the engine tune.
Choose DiabloSport if…
- Your car is stock or has bolt-ons — intake, exhaust, headers.
- You want the simplest possible path: plug in the handheld, load the tune, drive.
- You mainly want the common quality-of-life items: MDS delete, throttle response, speed limiter, tire/gear correction.
- You are only ever going to tune one vehicle.
What about the Pulsar module?
DiabloSport's Pulsar sits inline with the PCM instead of reflashing it, so on supported vehicles it can avoid the unlock step entirely. It is a strong option for owners who want gains without mailing a module — but it is less flexible than a full custom calibration on a heavily modified car.
Does the platform change how good the tune is?
Not by itself. The calibration quality comes from the tuner, the datalogs, and the revision process. What the platform changes is how much control the tuner has. On a stock-to-bolt-on car, both platforms land in the same place. On a blown 6.2L with a cam, HP Tuners gives us meaningfully more room to work safely.
