GPEC2 vs GPEC2A: How to Identify Your Dodge | N2 Speed

If you're getting ready to unlock your 2015+ Dodge, Jeep, RAM, or Chrysler PCM for custom tuning, the first thing you need to know is which controller you have. The two most common types are the GPEC2 and GPEC2A, and knowing the difference matters because it determines which unlock service you need.

In this guide, we'll show you exactly how to identify your PCM in under 60 seconds — no tools required beyond your eyes.

What Are GPEC2 and GPEC2A?

Both the GPEC2 and GPEC2A are Continental-manufactured Powertrain Control Modules used in 2015 and newer Mopar vehicles. "GPEC" stands for Gasoline Powertrain Electronic Controller. These are the computers that manage your engine's fuel injection, spark timing, cam phasing, torque management, and emissions systems.

Starting in 2015, Dodge locked these PCMs at the factory level, preventing aftermarket tuning tools like HP Tuners and Diablosport from reading or writing calibrations. That's why an unlock service is required before any custom tuning can happen.

How to Identify Your PCM: The Tab Color Test

The fastest way to identify your PCM is by looking at the locking tab colors on the PCM connector. You don't even need to remove the PCM — just look at the connector where the wiring harness plugs in.

GPEC2 — Grey & Purple Tabs

  • Locking tab colors: Grey and purple
  • Processor: MPC5566 (3 MB flash)
  • Found in: Some early 2015–2017 vehicles
  • Notes: Less common than GPEC2A. If you have one, contact us before ordering to confirm compatibility.

GPEC2A — Grey & Tan (Beige) Tabs

  • Locking tab colors: Grey and tan (beige)
  • Processor: MPC5674 (4 MB flash)
  • Found in: Most 2015–2024 Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and RAM vehicles
  • Notes: This is the most common controller. Our HP Tuners PCM unlock service covers GPEC2A controllers.

Which Vehicles Use Which PCM?

The GPEC2A is found in the vast majority of 2015+ Mopar vehicles, including:

  • Dodge Challenger — all trims from SXT to Hellcat/Demon (2015–2024)
  • Dodge Charger — all trims including Scat Pack and Hellcat (2015–2023)
  • Dodge Durango — V6 and HEMI models including SRT (2015–2024)
  • Chrysler 300 — V6 and HEMI (2015–2023)
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee — including SRT and Trackhawk (2015–2024)
  • Jeep Wrangler JL — V6, 2.0T, and 392 (2018–2024)
  • RAM 1500 — V6 and HEMI including TRX (2015–2024)
  • RAM 2500/3500 — gas HEMI models (2015–2024)

Some early 2015 vehicles may have the GPEC2 instead. If your vehicle is a 2015 model, we recommend removing the PCM and visually checking the tab colors before ordering.

What About GPEC5?

The GPEC5 is a newer controller found in select 2021–2025 vehicles, including the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and some newer RAM models. Where Is the PCM Located?

On most 2015+ Dodge and Chrysler vehicles, the PCM is located in the engine bay, typically near the battery or behind the front bumper fascia. On RAM trucks, it's usually on the driver's side of the engine bay. A YouTube search for your specific year and model will show you exactly where to find it and how to remove it.
