Dodge Computer Tuning: The Complete Guide to ECU, PCM & TCM Services
Dodge Computer Tuning: Everything You Need to Know
Modern Dodge vehicles - Challenger, Charger, RAM trucks, Durango, and Jeep Grand Cherokee - are controlled by onboard computers that manage everything from engine power to transmission behavior. Computer tuning (also called ECU tuning, PCM tuning, or flash tuning) modifies these computer calibrations to unlock more performance, better drivability, and features the factory left on the table.
What Is Computer Tuning?
Your Dodge has several computers that control the powertrain:
- PCM (Powertrain Control Module) - Controls engine timing, fuel delivery, torque management, speed limiter, and rev limiter
- TCM (Transmission Control Module) - Controls shift points, shift firmness, torque converter lockup, and line pressure
Computer tuning modifies the calibration data in these modules to optimize performance. Think of it like updating the software on your phone - same hardware, better performance.
What Can Computer Tuning Do for Your Dodge?
PCM Tuning Benefits
- Add 10-30+ horsepower depending on your mods
- Sharpen throttle response dramatically
- Remove or reduce torque management (huge on HEMI platforms)
- Delete MDS (Multi-Displacement System) to keep all 8 cylinders active
- Remove the factory speed limiter
- Adjust rev limiter
- Optimize air/fuel ratios for your fuel grade (87, 91, 93, or E85)
TCM Tuning Benefits
- Firmer, faster shifts
- Hold gears longer for more power before upshift
- Reduce shift flare (RPM spike between gears)
- Improve torque converter lockup for better power transfer
- Better tow/haul calibrations for RAM trucks

Do I Need a PCM Unlock First?
For 2015 and newer Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and RAM vehicles: yes. Chrysler locked the PCM starting in 2015, which means you need a PCM unlock service before any custom tuning can be done. This is a one-time service - you mail us your PCM, we unlock it in 1-2 business days, and mail it back. Then you're free to tune as much as you want.
For 2005-2014 Dodge vehicles, no unlock is needed. You can tune directly with HP Tuners or Diablosport.
Remote Computer Tuning - No Shop Visit Needed
N2 Speed specializes in remote email tuning. Here's how it works:
- Order your tune package online
- Read your vehicle's stock calibration using an HP Tuners RTD or Diablosport device
- Email us the file along with your mod list
- We write your custom calibration and email it back
- Flash the tune to your vehicle and go drive
- Send us a data log, we make revisions until it's perfect
No need to find a local tuning shop. We've tuned thousands of Dodge vehicles for customers across all 50 states.
