2015+ Dodge PCM Unlock: What It Is, How Long It Takes, and What to Expect

If you have tried to load a tune on a 2015 or newer Dodge, Jeep, RAM, or Chrysler and your device threw a security or write error, this is why: the factory PCM is locked. This page explains exactly what a PCM unlock is, which vehicles need it, what the process looks like step by step, and how long it actually takes.

What "PCM unlock" actually means

Starting with the 2015 model year, FCA began encrypting the Powertrain Control Module. The tuning device can still read some information, but it cannot write a calibration. Unlocking is a bench-level procedure that removes that factory security restriction so tuning software — HP Tuners or DiabloSport — can read and write custom calibrations. It does not add power on its own. It is the gate you have to pass through before any custom tuning is possible.

Which vehicles need it

  • Dodge — Charger, Challenger, Durango (2015–2024)
  • Jeep — Grand Cherokee, including SRT and Trackhawk
  • RAM — 1500, and 2500/3500 6.4L applications
  • Chrysler — 300

Engines covered include the 3.6L Pentastar, 5.7L HEMI, 6.4L 392, and 6.2L supercharged Hellcat. Controllers are typically GPEC2 and GPEC2A.

The step-by-step process

  1. Choose your platform first. HP Tuners or DiabloSport — the unlock is configured for one of them. If you have not bought a device yet, decide now.
  2. Order the unlock service and select your platform at checkout.
  3. Remove and ship the PCM only. Not the vehicle. The module ships to our facility at 1461 SW 30th Ave, Bay 16, Pompano Beach, FL 33069. Pack it well and include your order details.
  4. We bench-unlock it. The module is updated to the latest factory OS/calibration, unlocked on a professional bench setup, and verified. Typical turnaround is 24–48 hours from receipt.
  5. We ship it back. Reinstall it, connect your device, and you can now load calibrations.
  6. Optional: custom remote tune. Send us your mod list and datalogs and we write the calibration for your exact setup — all over email.

Common questions

Do I have to send the whole car? No. Only the PCM module.

How long am I without the vehicle? Only as long as the module is out — realistically shipping time plus our 24–48 hour bench window. Many customers plan around a week door to door.

Will unlocking hurt the PCM? The procedure is non-destructive and done on a bench, not over the OBD port, which is why it is reliable.

Can I use the same unlocked PCM with both HP Tuners and DiabloSport? Plan on one platform. Choose at checkout.

Do I need VIN or SKIM programming? Only if you are installing a replacement or used PCM. We can do it as part of the same service — tell us up front.

What about warranty and emissions? Custom tuning and MDS deletes are intended for off-road and competition use where applicable, and modifying calibrations can affect your factory warranty. If 50-state legality matters to you, ask us about DiabloSport's 50-state-legal options instead.

Beyond unlocking: bench flash and mail-in tuning

Some situations can't be handled through the OBD port at all — a bricked module, a replacement PCM that needs VIN programming, or a platform that requires bench access. We offer PCM bench tuning and bench flash service for Dodge, Jeep, RAM, Chrysler and GM, plus PCM/ECM/TCM module repair.

GM owners

GM ECMs have the same problem with a different name. We unlock E90 (Camaro SS, Corvette C6, Silverado/Sierra), E93, and E68 (Corvette Z06/ZR1) for HP Tuners with the same fast mail-in process.
