HP Tuners Credit System Explained
HP Tuners uses a credit-based licensing system to unlock a specific vehicle’s PCM/ECM/TCM so it can be read, edited, and flashed. This page explains what credits are, how they’re used, and what to expect when working with N2 Speed.
What are HP Tuners “Credits”?
Credits are a digital currency inside HP Tuners VCM Suite / VCM Editor. When you apply credits, you purchase a license for a vehicle/module. Once licensed, HP Tuners allows tuning access for that licensed controller(s) using your interface.
What do credits actually do?
-
Unlock tuning access to supported modules (PCM/ECM/TCM) by applying credits.
-
Create a vehicle/module license that stays tied to your HP Tuners account/interface.
-
Allow future reads/writes on the same licensed module without paying credits again (in most cases).
Think of credits like paying for permission to tune that specific computer/module.
How many credits do I need?
Credit cost depends on the platform and which modules you want to tune (engine, transmission, etc.). Some vehicles require licensing only the PCM, while others may require a separate license for the TCM or additional controllers.
If you’re not sure, N2 Speed can confirm your credit requirements based on your year, make, model, PCM/TCM type, and tuning goals.
Vehicle licensing vs. the HP Tuners interface
The HP Tuners interface (MPVI2 or MPVI3) is the hardware that connects your vehicle to your laptop. Credits are stored and managed through your HP Tuners account and used to create the license.
-
MPVI2 / MPVI3 = the hardware interface
-
Credits = the currency used to license a module
-
License = the permission created after you spend credits
Are credits refundable or transferable?
In general, once credits are applied and a module is licensed, credits are not refundable. Licensing is typically tied to your HP Tuners account/interface setup.
If you plan to tune multiple vehicles, it’s important to understand licensing before applying credits.

Common Questions
Do I need credits for every tune revision?
No. Credits are for licensing the vehicle/module. Once licensed, you can generally flash revisions without spending additional credits.
Do I need to license the transmission too?
Sometimes. It depends on the vehicle and what you want to tune. If you’re tuning shift points, line pressure, torque management, or transmission behavior, a TCM license may be required on supported platforms.
Can N2 Speed supply credits?
Typically, credits are purchased and applied through the customer’s HP Tuners account/interface. If you need help figuring out what to buy, we’ll point you to the correct setup.
